Do I need a shopping cart cover? This was a question that I asked myself multiple times before Nick was born. In fact I know I continued to ask it even after Nick was born. I protect myself from germs, but I don’t go crazy over them, so was a shopping cart cover necessary? Did I really want to lug one around? It seemed like such a waste. For the life of me I couldn’t decide, so I decided to let fate do it for me.
I had been told that you should have so many items in different price ranges on your baby registry. To get some more in the $20 range I added a shopping cart cover. I figured if I got it great, if I didn’t then no big deal. Wouldn’t you know that I got it. Even after receiving it I still wasn’t sure about wanting to use it, but I had it, so I decided to keep it.
Of course it was a long time before I could use it. Nick didn’t start sitting on his own until he was six months old, so it was a little bit after that before I gave it a try. In the end Nick loved the shopping cart cover. To him it is his special seat. One of the things I really liked about the particular cover that I received (the Eddie Bauer 3 in 1 Cover All) was that it has little stuffed animals on it that Nick can pay with. Plus it has pockets up top that are great for keeping a pacifier on hand (or to hide it if he doesn’t need it). While I’m still not crazy germ lady I know those shopping carts are pretty nasty, so I do like the barrier that it creates. Especially for days when Nick’s teeth hurt and he’ll gnaw on anything, and yes I have turned around and found his mouth on the cart (ewwww).
Is it obnoxious to carry around? Yes, it is. I don’t care that mine rolls up small, there still isn’t room for it in the diaper bag. It also is a bit of a pain to get it ready. Put this strap through here and then there, oh and don’t forget all of the Velcro tabs. Plus I can’t hold Nick and put it on, so I have to do it while Nick is still in the car (we always park next to the cart coral).
I early on decided to only use it for full grocery shopping trips. It’s just too much of a pain to deal with for a quick trip. I keep wondering when I’ll stop using it. Nick has started to get this crazy idea though that he wants to stand in the basket of the cart, but he’ll happily stay put if he has his cover, so for now we’ll keep using it. In the end it was a well liked and very used gift.
Did you find a shopping cart cover useful?

Hey Elizabeth,
I actually AM that crazy germ lady!! My youngest was a severe asthma sufferer and the less germs, the better. I actually didn’t discover these until my little guy was almost too big to sit in the front of the cart (he’s a teen now). But I would have loved to have one. I just became a grandma and, while my new granddaughter won’t be able to sit on her own for several months yet, I am hoping that my daughter will embrace it.
Hopefully, it will get easier and easier to use!

They really can be useful. I’ve heard germ reports on carts and they’re nasty. Thank goodness they have wipes for them now. I hope your daughter, and granddaughter, enjoy their cart cover as much as my son has
.
I’m sure he likes it, because it given him a nice soft seat. It is a cute one.
It certainly is nicer than the regular cart seat!
I had one but it was a pain, so I never used it. I wish I had gotten another kind.

They can be. That’s why we only use it for big trips. Mine does smoosh up well, so I like that.
I never used one with either of mine. But I was always intrigued by them. He is such a little cutie.

I used them all the time with my daughter, though she was an infant when the swine flu outbreak happened.

Oh, I can’t imagine worrying about that. I did get the swine flu and it kicked my butt. I took well over a month to feel like myself again.
