Fun In The Sun: Or Is It Fun In The Rain

by on August 10, 2012

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again.  Nick is a child that loves being outdoors.  Every day we take a three mile walk in the morning, and a two mile walk in the evening.  The lack of rain this Summer, while not good for my lawn and plants, has made it very easy to be sure that we don’t miss our walks.  The few morning we did have rain Nick became a wild child that couldn’t calm down and focus on much of anything.  As soon as the rain would stop we would be out the door with him.  Once he had his walk, no matter what the time, he would return back to his normal self.  We’ve already been commenting about the fact that the Winter could become a very difficult time for him.

Yesterday, for the first time all Summer, we had an all day rain.  During the morning it poured, and there was no way that we could take our walk.  Luckily Nick handled it pretty well.  After nap time though was a different story.  He had woken up early, and I figured we’d go for a walk.  The sky was still overcast, and it was a bit chilly, but I was ready for our walk as well.  It was quite a surprise though when we headed out with the stroller and found it sprinkling, and then it started raining.  I thought we had been in the clear since the weather forecast had said that the rain would stop in the afternoon and pick up again in the evening.  We waited for a little bit in the garage, but eventually I realized that the rain wasn’t going to let up, so we headed back inside.

For a few hours we tried to keep busy.  I did everything I could think of to keep Nick entertained.  His attention span was pretty much shot though, and by 4:30 I was at my wits end. I realized that the rain, while not gone, was fairly light.  I decided that we were going to go for walk whether it was raining or not.  I went into Nick’s closet and pulled out the new raincoat that my mother had just got him.  Then I grabbed a hoody for me (I don’t have a raincoat) and put on my flip-flops and out we went.

It was quite nice walking in the rain.  Nick was so happy to be outside that I don’t think he would have cared if it was pouring, but I was happy that it wasn’t.  We got lucky and the rain actually let up while we were out.  We didn’t take our normal big walk, but we did cruise the neighborhood for 30 minutes.  I didn’t want to get too far from home in case the rain wanted to start back up again.

As a kid I played outside in the rain a lot, and not just light rain either.  Running around in the rain was so much fun.  I’m so glad I went with my gut and took Nick out because he was a whole new kid after his walk and dinner.  It just goes to show that sun or not, you can still have a good time outdoors in the Summer.

Nick looks so cute in his raincoat. As a child I too love playing in the rain.
