Who doesn’t need a good laugh? I’ve always believed that laughter was the best medicine. Even back in college I used to find the time to watch Whose Line Is It Anyway? (I loved that show) because it was a guaranteed laugh and laughing was the only way I could get through all the stress.Luckily I don’t have college stress anymore, but life can wear me out. Working full time, being a mom full time, and running the blog make finding any me time nearly impossible. We all need a little time to unwind though, don’t we?
I was very excited to review No Laughing Allowed which is the first book in the Life Well Blogged collection. I’ve been very busy lately and a good laugh was just what the doctor had ordered. These really are mom friendly books because they’re full of short fun stories. Each book is a compilation of funny blog posts that were discovered by the authors Monica Merrill Mylet and Abby Fatica. None of the stories were very long, so if I had only fifteen minutes then I could easily read a few stories before I had to put the book down (which wasn’t always easy).
I must say that I broke the rule and laughed, a lot. My favorite stories were the ones I could relate to. Like the mother who’s son was licking everything…
“My laptop.
The side of his sippy cup, SEVEN THOUSAND TIMES in the last month.
His shoe…the bottom of it.
A chair at McDonald’s (Is he going to die from that one?).”
There are other funny stories as well. I loved the one of the mom running from the skunk…
“About this time is when the skunk changed the game and got brave. I’m sure he had sized me up for the wuss that I am and he decided that his best defense was to charge. So he did, right toward me.”
Some of my favorite parts were actually the writing that the authors added to tie the stories together. The only thing I didn’t personally like was some of the language. I don’t swear a lot but I do realize that certain words help get a point across. I just felt that some of the stories used that kind of language too much. The authors did give a heads up about the language in the forward and mention that they did not want to change the original work which I totally understand. This truly was just a personal reaction.
Overall No Laughing Allowed was a nice quick read. Some of the stories will make you shake your head in bewilderment over choices that other moms have made, and others will have you rolling on the floor.
