Why Store a Key Outside?

While the safest solution is to just not put a key outside at all that isn’t always practical. With the way our house is currently we can’t get locked out, but we did get locked out of our old house a few times. I remember a few times growing up when we were grateful that my mother kept a spare key hidden outside as well. Things just happen and you don’t always have someone around that can help you get back in when you’re locked out.

Having kids that have to come home from school by themselves is another good reason to use a rock key safe hider or to have some other type of key hiding device around. Working in the schools I can’t tell you how many kids have told me that they misplaced their house key. It seriously happens all the time. Sometimes keeping a key outside is a far better solution than sending it to school with your child!

Lock Box Key Holders

Lock boxes aren’t really the best option for long time use because they usually hang from the door handle. This makes them a bit of an eyesore and just plain annoying. That being said they are a great way to safely keep a key outside when you need one out there now and again. I have used mine for when I had a contractor that needed to get in and work on the house, or when I was out of town and needed someone to get in and take care of my cat.

A few years back I got to review a Stor-More Key Safe from WordLock. This is the lock box that I use when I need to leave a key outside for someone else. The lock is very easy to use, and very durable. What I love most of all is that it is easy to reset the combination for the lock. I mostly use it when I need to help other people get into my house, so being able to change the combination is really nice. Plus the combination you set is a word, so it’s really easy for other people to remember to help them get in.
