Sophie the Giraffe

by on October 12, 2011

Until my son was a few months old I had never heard of Sophie the Giraffe. Then people from my pregnancy group started mentioning Sophie. They started to discuss whether their infants liked Sophie or not, but I still didn’t know what she was. Then someone in the group finally asked the million dollar question…”what is Sophie?” That’s when I found out that Sophie was a rubber giraffe that was made out of all natural materials, squeaked, and had a price tag around $20.

I couldn’t believe it. Twenty dollars for a teething toy? I couldn’t imagine spending that much money on what some referred to as a, “glorified dog toy.” I decided that I didn’t care if Sophie was the teething product to have. I was not going to buy one.

Then Nick started teething. I got out all of the teething toys that I had been given at my shower and washed them. It turned out that Nick didn’t care for any of them. He decided that he would much rather chew on our fingers. One day when Nick and I were having coffee with my family at a coffee shop my mother had the idea to open up a straw an let him chew on the middle of it. He loved it! I started to wonder if he would like chewing on Sophie’s legs.

Finally I gave in and ordered Sophie. After ordering I got so excited for Nick’s Sophie to arrive, and she didn’t disappoint. For my son it was love at first bite. Just as I thought chewing on Sophie’s legs was a lot like chewing on our fingers. As an added bonus for us Nick also loves to play with Sophie as much as he likes to chew on her. He also gets excited if we hold her in front of him and make her squeak. When we do that he always gives a big grin and reaches out to grab her.

I never in my wildest dreams would have thought that I would get a teething toy that cost so much money, but if given the choice I would do it all over again. Sophie is about the only teething toy that Nick will use, and it saves my fingers since his chewing on them really hurts now that he has teeth.
